Outflows from young objects observed with the ISO-LWS I. Fine structure lines [O I] 63, [O I]145 and [C II]157 micron
Far infrared fine structure line data from the ISO archive have been
extracted for several hundred YSOs and their outflows, including molecular (CO)
outflows, optical jets and Herbig-Haro (HH) objects. Given the importance of
these lines to astrophysics, their excitation and transfer ought to be
investigated in detail and, at this stage, the reliability of the diagnostic
power of the fine structure transitions of O I and C II has been examined.
Several issues, such as the extremely small intensity ratios of the oxygen 63
micron to 145 micron lines, are still awaiting an explanation. It is
demonstrated that, in interstellar cloud conditions, the 145 micron line is
prone to masing, but that this effect is likely an insufficient cause of the
line ratio anomaly observed from cold dark clouds. Very optically thick
emission could in principle also account for this, but would need similar,
prohibitively high column densities and must therefore be abondoned as a viable
explanation. One is left with [O I] 63 micron self absorption by cold and
tenuous foreground gas, as has been advocated for distant luminous sources.
Recent observations with the submillimeter observatory Odin support this
scenario also in the case of nearby dark molecular clouds. On the basis of this
large statistical material we are led to conclude that in star forming regions,

The living and the dead; an investigation into the status of erasure within the floor of Bath Abbey
The floor of Bath Abbey offers a singular test of authenticity. Nineteenth century repairs and additions caused horizontal grave markers, which comprise the majority of the Abbeyâs floor, to become separated from the burial sites they were intended to memorialize. A century and a half of further occupation has had the effect of removing many inscriptions as surfaces are worn smooth. The result is a patchwork of unintended edits and accidental poetry. This paper explores the notions of authenticity, essence, memorial and erasure as they pertain to the Abbey floor, in particular with regard to the role the body plays in inhabiting/eroding the floorâfrom both above and below. The author argues that the stones which are most out of place or worn to a state of erasure are no less authentic than their intact equivalents, but that they can be considered to have moved to another state of authenticity rich in resonance and meaning. This paper, in short, is a defense of erasure and that erosion through occupation may be considered a form of social memory; indeed, the marks of walking become the inscription. In other words, the undesigned (erasure, the cutting and repositioning of ledger stones, the missing inscriptions) becomes considered not as a form of dirt but as the positive traces of on-going and meaningful occupation

Thermal H<sub>2</sub>O emission from the Herbig-Haro flow HH 54
The first detection of thermal water emission from a Herbig-Haro object is presented. The observations were performed with the LWS (Long Wavelength Spectrograph) aboard ISO (Infrared Space Observatory). Besides H2O, rotational lines of CO are present in the spectrum of HH 54. These high-J CO lines are used to derive the physical model parameters of the FIR (far-infrared) molecular line emitting regions. This model fits simultaneously the observed OH and H2O spectra for an OH abundance X(OH)=10-6 and a water vapour abundance X(H2O)=10-5.
At a distance of 250pc, the total CO, OH and H2O rotational line cooling rate is estimated to be 1.3x10-2 Lâ, which is comparable to the mechanical luminosity generated by the 10km s-1 shocks, suggesting that practically all of the cooling of the weak-shock regions is done by these three molecular species alone
The Iron abundance in Galactic Planetary Nebulae
We constrain the iron abundance in a sample of 33 low-ionization Galactic
planetary nebulae (PNe) using [Fe III] lines and correcting for the
contribution of higher ionization states with ionization correction factors
(ICFs) that take into account uncertainties in the atomic data. We find very
low iron abundances in all the objects, suggesting that more than 90% of their
iron atoms are condensed onto dust grains. This number is based on the solar
iron abundance and implies a lower limit on the dust-to-gas mass ratio, due
solely to iron, of M_dust/M_gas>1.3x10^{-3} for our sample. The depletion
factors of different PNe cover about two orders of magnitude, probably
reflecting differences in the formation, growth, or destruction of their dust
grains. However, we do not find any systematic difference between the gaseous
iron abundances calculated for C-rich and O-rich PNe, suggesting similar iron
depletion efficiencies in both environments. The iron abundances of our sample
PNe are similar to those derived following the same procedure for a group of 10
Galactic H II regions. These high depletion factors argue for high depletion
efficiencies of refractory elements onto dust grains both in molecular clouds
and AGB stars, and low dust destruction efficiencies both in interstellar and

Neglected Diseases in the News: A Content Analysis of Recent International Media Coverage Focussing on Leishmaniasis and Trypanosomiasis
In recent years, there has been a flurry of activity to reverse the neglect that has characterised NTDs, mostly focussed on drug development. The drug gap may be explained by market failure, yet other forces also conspire to cause the neglect of NTDs. One problem is the low visibility of these diseases. By comparison, the high-profile âbig threeâ infectious diseases of AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria have received increased donor attention and funding with greater visibility. Efforts to remove the âneglectâ from NTDs must involve raising their profile. This study, focussing on three of the most neglected diseases, aims to provide a context of the current media situationâthe what, where, and why of NTD coverageâto support future advocacy work
The XMM-Newton serendipitous ultraviolet source survey catalogue
The XMM-Newton Serendipitous Ultraviolet Source Survey (XMM-SUSS) is a
catalogue of ultraviolet (UV) sources detected serendipitously by the Optical
Monitor (XMM-OM) on-board the XMM-Newton observatory. The catalogue contains
ultraviolet-detected sources collected from 2,417 XMM-OM observations in 1-6
broad band UV and optical filters, made between 24 February 2000 and 29 March
2007. The primary contents of the catalogue are source positions, magnitudes
and fluxes in 1 to 6 passbands, and these are accompanied by profile
diagnostics and variability statistics. The XMM-SUSS is populated by 753,578 UV
source detections above a 3 sigma signal-to-noise threshold limit which relate
to 624,049 unique objects. Taking account of substantial overlaps between
observations, the net sky area covered is 29-54 square degrees, depending on UV
filter. The magnitude distributions peak at 20.2, 20.9 and 21.2 in UVW2, UVM2
and UVW1 respectively. More than 10 per cent of sources have been visited more
than once using the same filter during XMM-Newton operation, and > 20 per cent
of sources are observed more than once per filter during an individual visit.
Consequently, the scope for science based on temporal source variability on
timescales of hours to years is broad. By comparison with other astrophysical
catalogues we test the accuracy of the source measurements and define the
nature of the serendipitous UV XMM-OM source sample. The distributions of
source colours in the UV and optical filters are shown together with the
expected loci of stars and galaxies, and indicate that sources which are
detected in multiple UV bands are predominantly star-forming galaxies and stars

The association between antihypertensive treatment and serious adverse events by age and frailty: A cohort study
BACKGROUND: Antihypertensives are effective at reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease, but limited data exist quantifying their association with serious adverse events, particularly in older people with frailty. This study aimed to examine this association using nationally representative electronic health record data. METHODS AND FINDINGS: This was a retrospective cohort study utilising linked data from 1,256 general practices across England held within the Clinical Practice Research Datalink between 1998 and 2018. Included patients were aged 40+ years, with a systolic blood pressure reading between 130 and 179 mm Hg, and not previously prescribed antihypertensive treatment. The main exposure was defined as a first prescription of antihypertensive treatment. The primary outcome was hospitalisation or death within 10 years from falls. Secondary outcomes were hypotension, syncope, fractures, acute kidney injury, electrolyte abnormalities, and primary care attendance with gout. The association between treatment and these serious adverse events was examined by Cox regression adjusted for propensity score. This propensity score was generated from a multivariable logistic regression model with patient characteristics, medical history and medication prescriptions as covariates, and new antihypertensive treatment as the outcome. Subgroup analyses were undertaken by age and frailty. Of 3,834,056 patients followed for a median of 7.1 years, 484,187 (12.6%) were prescribed new antihypertensive treatment in the 12 months before the index date (baseline). Antihypertensives were associated with an increased risk of hospitalisation or death from falls (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR] 1.23, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.21 to 1.26), hypotension (aHR 1.32, 95% CI 1.29 to 1.35), syncope (aHR 1.20, 95% CI 1.17 to 1.22), acute kidney injury (aHR 1.44, 95% CI 1.41 to 1.47), electrolyte abnormalities (aHR 1.45, 95% CI 1.43 to 1.48), and primary care attendance with gout (aHR 1.35, 95% CI 1.32 to 1.37). The absolute risk of serious adverse events with treatment was very low, with 6 fall events per 10,000 patients treated per year. In older patients (80 to 89 years) and those with severe frailty, this absolute risk was increased, with 61 and 84 fall events per 10,000 patients treated per year (respectively). Findings were consistent in sensitivity analyses using different approaches to address confounding and taking into account the competing risk of death. A strength of this analysis is that it provides evidence regarding the association between antihypertensive treatment and serious adverse events, in a population of patients more representative than those enrolled in previous randomised controlled trials. Although treatment effect estimates fell within the 95% CIs of those from such trials, these analyses were observational in nature and so bias from unmeasured confounding cannot be ruled out. CONCLUSIONS: Antihypertensive treatment was associated with serious adverse events. Overall, the absolute risk of this harm was low, with the exception of older patients and those with moderate to severe frailty, where the risks were similar to the likelihood of benefit from treatment. In these populations, physicians may want to consider alternative approaches to management of blood pressure and refrain from prescribing new treatment
An improved method for statistical studies of the internal kinematics of HII regions: the case of M 83
We present the integrated Halpha emission line profile for 157 HII regions in
the central 3.4' x 3.4' of the galaxy M 83 (NGC 5236). Using the Fabry-Perot
interferometer GHaFaS, on the 4.2 m William Herschel on La Palma, we show the
importance of a good characterization of the instrumental response function for
the study of line profile shapes. The luminosity-velocity dispersion relation
is also studied, and in the log(L)-log(sigma) plane we do not find a linear
relation, but an upper envelope with equation log(L)=0.9 *log(sigma)+38.1. For
the adopted distance of 4.5 Mpc, the upper envelope appears at the luminosity
L=10^38.5 ergs, in full agreement with previous studies of other galaxies,
reinforcing the idea of using HII regions as standard candles.Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA
âInspired and assistedâ, or âberated and destroyedâ? Research leadership, management and performativity in troubled times
Research leadership in Australian universities takes place against a backdrop of policy reforms concerned with measurement and comparison of institutional research performance. In particular, the Excellence in Research in Australian initiative undertaken by the Australian Research Council sets out to evaluate research quality in Australian universities, using a combination of expert review process, and assessment of performance against ‘quality indicators’. Benchmarking exercises of this sort continue to shape institutional policy and practice, with inevitable effects on the ways in which research leadership, mentoring and practice are played out within university faculties and departments. In an exploratory study that interviewed 32 Australian academics in universities in four Australian states, we asked participants, occupying formal or informal research leadership roles, to comment on their perceptions of research leadership as envisioned and enacted in their particular workplaces. We found a pervasive concern amongst participants that coalesced around binaries characterized in metaphoric terms of ‘carrots and whips’. Research leadership was seen by many as managerial in nature, and as such, largely tethered to instrumentalist notions of productivity and performativity, while research cultures were seen as languishing under the demoralizing weight of reward and punishment systems. Here, we consider what is at stake for the future of the academic workforce under such conditions, arguing that new models of visionary research leadership are urgently needed in the ‘troubled times’ of techno-bureaucratic university reforms.<br /
